How High Should LED Grow Lights Hang Above Vegetables in a Grow Tent

There is no single perfect height for an LED grow light inside a grow tent. The right distance depends on the fixture, its power setting, the crop, and the size of the canopy. A height that keeps lettuce compact may be too intense for new basil seedlings and not quite strong enough for flowering peppers.

Inside my own grow tents, I treat the recommended hanging height as a starting point rather than a fixed rule. The plants get the final say. Manufacturer charts are useful, but watching new growth over several days gives you a much more reliable answer.

Start With a Sensible Height, Not a Magic Number

For common LED board and bar fixtures used in small grow tents, these distances are reasonable starting points when the manufacturer does not provide clear guidance:

  • Seedlings and young plants: 24 to 30 inches above the canopy
  • Lettuce, spinach, basil, and leafy herbs: 18 to 24 inches above the canopy
  • Established peppers and tomatoes: 14 to 20 inches above the canopy

Measure from the light emitting surface of the fixture to the top leaves, not from the grow tent ceiling or the floor. If your LED has a dimmer, its power setting matters just as much as its height.

A powerful fixture at 50% can sometimes hang closer than a smaller fixture running at full power. Reflective grow tent walls also send light back toward the plants, so copying a distance used on an open shelf can produce different results.

When in doubt, begin slightly higher and lower the light gradually. Mild stretching is easier to correct than bleached or damaged leaves.

Growth Stage Changes the Right Distance

Seedlings do not need the same intensity as mature vegetables. Their first leaves are small, their roots are limited, and they can become stressed quickly under a close LED. I usually start seedlings toward the upper end of the suggested range, then lower the fixture if their stems begin getting long and thin.

Once leafy greens fill more of the grow tent floor, they intercept more light. At this stage, I focus less on one plant directly under the fixture and more on the entire canopy. Even coverage is usually more valuable than maximum intensity in the center.

Tomatoes and peppers can use stronger light as they mature and begin flowering. The practical problem is that they also grow taller. One mistake I made early on was waiting until the plants nearly touched the fixture before thinking about height. Raising the light helped, but by then I had very little room left for adjustment.

In a short grow tent, begin training and pruning tall vegetables before vertical space becomes tight. A flatter canopy lets you keep the LED at a useful distance without scorching the tallest branch or leaving shorter plants in deep shade.

Signs the LED Is Too Close

Light stress usually appears first on leaves nearest the LED. Look across the top of the grow tent canopy for a pattern rather than judging one damaged leaf.

  • Upper leaves become unusually pale or washed out
  • Leaf edges curl upward even when the growing medium is moist
  • Dry brown patches develop on leaves closest to the fixture
  • New growth stays very tight, small, or distorted
  • Plants droop during the light period but recover after the LED turns off

I have noticed that basil often shows stress through upward curling and a dull, faded look before obvious burning appears. Lettuce may develop dry edges or become bitter when excess light is combined with heat inside the grow tent.

Do not assume every pale leaf means the light is too close. Root trouble and nutrient problems can look similar. Light stress is more likely when the highest leaves are affected first and plants near the center of the fixture look worse than those around the edges.

The hand test is not reliable for LEDs. A fixture can feel fairly cool while still delivering more light than a young plant can handle.

Signs the LED Is Too Far Away

When the fixture is too high or too dim, vegetables spend energy reaching toward it. Common clues include:

  • Long, weak seedling stems
  • Wide spaces between leaves on basil, tomatoes, or peppers
  • Plants leaning toward the center of the grow tent
  • Leafy greens growing upright instead of forming compact heads
  • Slow growth around the edges of the canopy

What surprised me most when I started using LEDs was how much canopy coverage changed with only a small height adjustment. Lowering a light strengthened the center plants, but sometimes made the corners noticeably darker. Raising it improved coverage, although the overall intensity dropped.

I prefer a slightly higher fixture with an even canopy over a very low fixture that creates a bright center and weak edges. This is especially useful when growing several trays of herbs or leafy greens inside one compact grow tent.

A Simple Way to Adjust LED Height

Avoid changing the light height, dimmer setting, watering routine, and nutrients at the same time. You will not know which change helped.

  1. Check the starting distance. Measure from the fixture to the tallest leaves and write it down.
  2. Inspect the whole canopy. Compare plants in the center with those near the grow tent walls.
  3. Change one setting. Move the LED by 2 to 4 inches, or change the dimmer by about 10%.
  4. Wait and watch new growth. Give established plants at least two days before making another adjustment. Seedlings showing serious stress should be moved farther away immediately.
  5. Measure again as plants grow. Fast growing tomatoes and peppers can close the gap surprisingly quickly.

Taking a quick photo from the same position each day makes subtle stretching, curling, and color changes easier to notice. This has been more useful to me than relying on memory while checking plants under the purple or bright white cast of a grow light.

Height Versus Dimming in a Small Grow Tent

Raising an LED improves coverage but does not reduce the electricity it uses or the heat released into the room. Dimming lowers light output, electricity use, and usually heat. That can matter in an apartment where the grow tent shares space with a bedroom, office, or living area.

If the canopy already has even coverage but the top leaves look stressed, I would dim the fixture before raising it much higher. If the center looks healthy while the edges stretch, I would raise the LED slightly to spread the light, then increase power only if the entire canopy remains weak.

Check your grow tent today with a tape measure. Set the fixture near the appropriate starting range, inspect the highest leaves and the canopy edges, then make one small adjustment. My first move would be to protect the tallest growth while keeping the light even across every edible plant below.
