What to Grow in a Greenhouse for Beginners

Let’s jump right into the article getting you one step closer to starting a greenhouse garden of your own.

Greenhouse Gardening Tips for Beginners

Let me run you through some basics of gardening.

Firstly, remember to pick an ideal place for your greenhouse. Since a greenhouse needs ample sunlight and an accessible source of water, do make sure you pick a place that has easy access to these necessities.

Secondly, you will have to figure out what kind of greenhouse you want. You can be a casual greenhouse gardener using it as a hobby. You can also use it as your career path or a full-fledged business. Depending on what kind of greenhouse you wish to pursue, you should fix a budget and start your journey.

Thirdly, don’t worry if your greenhouse is small and lacks a lot of advanced tools. With the knowledge of what to grow in a small greenhouse and how to grow it, you shouldn’t face many problems.

Cautions for Greenhouse Gardening

We can’t move forward without mentioning some cautions that you must take. Pests are probably your worst enemy. Pests like rats and mice will damage your harvest greatly if they get the chance. So when picking a place for your greenhouse, make sure there are no mice or rat holes. Harsh weather is another huge enemy of your plants.

Thankfully the greenhouse has the capability to fight against it. Make sure you have a proper heater during cold times and a proper cooler during hot times. Also, if there is a lack of light for some reason, then make sure to provide a light source as well. Last but not least, we need to talk about seeds. The quality and many other properties of your plant depend on the seeds you have used. These seeds have strengths and weaknesses of their own so do some research on them too.

Plants to Grow as a Beginner

I try to use this section as a greenhouse planting guide where I discuss how and what to grow in a greenhouse. What you grow is entirely up to you, but if you are just getting started, I have some advice. I would recommend growing plants with resistance to cold in winter, season-based plants during the fall, and smaller plants along with flowers for summer.

Easy to Grow Plants- You Do Start First

As a beginner just stepping into greenhouse gardening, I would recommend growing commonly known yet easy to grow plants like strawberries, mushrooms, onion, garlic, peas, potato, sunflower, tomatoes, leafy greens, and radishes. These plants are easy to grow and are also highly used in our day-to-day lives. Even though you can grow fruits, flowers, vegetables, etc., in a greenhouse, I probably would consider growing vegetables in a greenhouse above all other plants. Vegetables grow great in a greenhouse because of the controlled environment. They can be very expensive if grown and sold out of season. Not to mention, it can be added to your menu as well.

In Summer & Winter What Vegetables You Should Grow?

Since summer and winter are the two seasons when we see the weather in its most extreme form, it is important to know what vegetables to grow in these respective seasons in particular. For the season of winter, I recommend going for cabbage, kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, potato, and winter lettuce. As for what to grow in a greenhouse in summer, I would advise you to go for melons, eggplants, sage, chives, marjoram, lavender, parsley, okra, sage, basil, hot peppers, rosemary, thyme, etc.

All Year Long Vegetables for Beginners

If you don’t care about any seasonal or other restrictions, then here is a list of crops falling into different categories. For flowers, go for daisies, nigella, morning glories, marigold, sunflowers, begonia, peace lily, African violets, etc. For herbs and spices, go for anise, licorice, rosemary, cumin, lavender, bay laurel, thyme, catnip, sage, cilantro, mint, etc. For fruits, go for cantaloupe, lemons, strawberries, chilies, grapes, cherry, cucumber, peppers, raspberries, and tomatoes. And as for vegetables, go for asparagus, okra, green onion, micro greens, carrots, kale, zucchini, spinach, turnips, eggplants, etc. These plants pretty much grow all year long and are easy to grow for beginners.

Final Words

Let’s face it; you will probably never eat a vegetable or fruit that is fresher, or smell a flower that smells better than the one grown in your own portable greenhouse. With the idea of self-sufficiency and nature preservation in mind, I recommend using this guide to get a proper idea of greenhouse gardening and start your own gardening journey. I want to end in the hope that you manage to overcome the obstacles that come your way and utilize your resources and knowledge to establish the best greenhouse for your taste.
